Mouthwash Facts In Birmingham

Mouthwash Facts From Your Birmingham Cosmetic Dentist

Hi, I am Dr. J. Paul Koch and this is the Koch Aesthetic Dentistry blog. In today’s post I would like to discuss mouthwash. Many Alabama residents use mouthwashes to freshen their breath and help retard tooth decay. Mouthwash should never be used exclusively though, good oral hygiene starts with a thorough tooth brushing followed by flossing. Mouthwash is just a supplement in your dental hygiene tool box.

It is important for Alabama residents to know what kind of mouthwash they are using. Some mouthwashes merely mask bad breath while others help reduce the bacteria that causes plaque and bad breath.

If you are one of the Birmingham residents that suffers from bad breath, it is important to choose a mouthwash that contains ingredients that help prevent tooth decay such as fluoride. But Birmingham folks also need to use caution when using mouthwashes because many of the ingredients are dangerous when the recommended amount of mouthwash is exceeded.

Some of the poisonous components are chlorhexidine gluconate, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and methyl salicylate. If you experience throat pain, vomiting, headache, or abdominal pain after using mouthwash, seek medical help immediately. The National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) can answer questions if you feel have over used your mouthwash.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry we want everyone to have great smelling breath, but to use caution when treating their bad breath. Make sure to read your mouthwash label and follow all instructions given.

In addition to preventative dental care, Koch Aesthetic Dentistry offers a wide range of cosmetic dentistry procedures. If you are a resident anxious to have a whiter, brighter smile, Koch Aesthetic Dentistry offers various teeth whitening options. Koch Aesthetic Dentistry also provide smile restoration and cosmetic and implant dentistry.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry we have been improving the smiles of residents in Birmingham Alabama and the surrounding areas since 2000. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Help Me Birmingham; I’m Afraid Of The Dentist!

Sedation Dentist Birmingham If you are afraid of your Birmingham cosmetic dentist, you are not alone. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we encounter many nervous first-time Birmingham dental patients. How do we calm their fears, provide a comfortable dental environment and earn lifelong clients?

1) We carefully explain the findings of the initial dental examination and thoroughly outline any recommended procedures. The consultation also includes a discussion about pain control including oral conscious sedation medications. This allows our Birmingham implant dentistry clients to make informed decisions about their oral health and necessary dental procedures.

2) Dr. J. Paul Koch practices gentle, pain-free dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry treatment will not begin until you are numb. Keep in mind, however, that every dentistry patient reacts to numbing agents and sedation dentistry medications differently.

Speak up quickly if you start to feel discomfort. We will pause treatment, administer additional analgesic and wait until it takes effect. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we never rush cosmetic dental or restorative procedures.

We will do our best to make you comfortable, whether you are receiving dental veneers, undergoing crown-lengthening treatment, having your teeth whitened, or replacing your old silver fillings.

3) We provide many in-office amenities at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry which help our dental patients focus on something pleasant during cosmetic dental treatment. Not every cosmetic dental patient chooses sedation dentistry. Sometimes chemical-free diversions such as listening to your favorite music provide a diversion while letting you remain clear-headed.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we understand dental anxiety and will help you overcome it. We are located at 2311 Highland Ave S, Ste 323 in Birmingham, AL 35205.

The Gift Of Oral Health In Birmingham

Dental Spa Birmingham

Many implant dentistry patients in the Birmingham area may wonder why, with all the advances in dental medicine, we still send you home with a complimentary toothbrush and roll of floss. It’s true, they do seem a little old-fashioned in our high-tech world, but don’t let their simple design fool you. These tools are the best bet to prevent tooth decay, plaque build-up, and gum disease for Birmingham dental patients!

When done properly and consistently, brushing and flossing are an essential part of everyday oral hygiene. Brushing, which should be done at least twice a day, can be done effectively with any type of toothbrush. There is no need to pay a bundle for a fancy electric toothbrush from your Birmingham Wal-Mart, just brush your teeth in small, circular motions for 2-3 minutes making sure to reach all the surfaces.

Flossing should be done once a day and is important for reaching the areas where a toothbrush cannot. A wide variety of floss can be found at local drugstores, so find one you like.

I’m Dr. J. Paul Koch, an experienced Birmingham cosmetic dentist, and I want to help you enjoy your dental visits and adore your smile.

Our passionate staff loves sending our Birmingham area patients away with a new toothbrush and floss, but we also find it rewarding to see our patients gain renewed confidence with a smile makeover.

We’d love to answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry such as tooth whitening, veneers, dental implants, or any other dental health topic.

Give us a call today at 205-202-8618!

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Alabama

Friday, August 24th, 2012

Cosmetic Dentistry Alabama

Hello, I am Dr. J. Paul Koch of Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Alabama. Today’s blog topic is ‘How Your Diet Affects Your Smile.’

I’m sure you brush and floss regularly and hopefully visit your Alabama cosmetic dental practice for cleanings, but did you know that making small changes to your diet can improve your oral health?

Most Alabama residents are aware that sugar found in candy, cookies, and sodas can harm your teeth, but some Alabama people don’t realize that all carbohydrates can cause cavities. A handful of pretzels or a piece of pumpernickel bread can have the same effect on your teeth as a fudge brownie.

All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars, which are converted into plaque, which can then cause cavities and gum disease. Carbs are naturally sticky and adhere to your teeth. Eating carbs with meals is healthier than eating them as snacks because more saliva is generated at mealtime. Saliva helps prevent food particles from sticking to teeth.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, I continue to see tooth damage caused by sodas and sports drinks. If you choose to drink them, sip them through a straw. By limiting the contact of these drinks on your teeth, you will help preserve your enamel.

Another way Alabama folks can improve their oral health is to get 800mg of calcium a day for men and 1,000mg for women under 50. Calcium helps strengthen your jaw and secure your teeth firmly in the jaw bone.

Diet alone will not prevent cavities and gum disease for Alabama folks, however, a few changes in eating habits can help maintain healthy teeth and gums.

My staff and I at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry are accepting new Alabama general, cosmetic and implant dentistry patients in the 35205 zip code area. I encourage you to call 205-202-8618 today to schedule an exam and cleaning.

Koch Aesthetic Dentistry offers a full menu of general and specialty dental services including smile restoration and reconstructive and laser dentistry. For more information, call today to schedule an appointment or visit http://www.kochaesthetics.com/meetdrkoch.htm.

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable In Alabama

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Sedation Dentistry Alabama

Pain isn’t fun. Your Alabama family dentist knows this, and that is why the dental team at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry have made patient comfort a top priority. In conjunction with creating a relaxing environment, your dentist has various medications that can reduce and even eliminate pain associated with different cosmetic dental procedures to give you a more enjoyable experience.

Some of the most common pain-relieving medications used in Alabama cosmetic dental offices and around the country are topical anesthetics. These are swabbed directly onto mouth tissue so they only numb the very surface layers. Topical anesthetics can reduce the pain of mouth sores, or they can be applied to prepare the mouth for an injection.

Local anesthetics are injected into mouth tissue (usually the gums) to block the nerve sensations to specific areas of the mouth. Alabama dentists numb the mouth in this way before filling cavities, treating gum disease, or before certain cosmetic dentistry procedures.

More involved dental procedures may necessitate the need for nitrous oxide or even general anesthesia. Ask us about sedation dentistry and oral conscious sedation.

It is very common for your dentist to recommend an over the counter analgesic to relieve pain after a dental visit. These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

Because your Alabama cosmetic dentist will most likely use a pain reliever during the dental visit or prescribe something for you to take after the treatment, make sure you jot down a complete list of medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, before each appointment.

I’m Dr. Paul Koch and I want Alabama residents to be informed about their dental care, especially as it pertains to pain relief during dental treatment. If you live in Alabama and are looking for quality dental care, please contact my office today at 205-202-8618. Our continuing education staff would be happy to talk to you about cosmetic dentistry, sedation dentistry, implant dentistry, and the other services we offer.

Our Birmingham Dental Team Takes Care Of You

Birmingham Dental Team

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, each dental professional on our team allows our practice to operate smoothly and provide the highest caliber of dental care. Today’s Birmingham cosmetic dentistry article will focus on the duties of a dental assistant.

You probably think of the dental assistant as: “The one who suctions my mouth while the dentist is working on me,” or “The one who attaches the bib around my neck,” and you are correct. However, his/her knowledge of patient care and dental lab procedures is probably more extensive than you realize.

Competent dental assistants work behind the scenes at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Birmingham. They assist Dr. J. Paul Koch during all dental procedures including basic oral examinations, tooth prep, laser dentistry and cavity filling, as well as lengthy smile makeovers involving multiple procedures. Our competent assistants also work with our dental hygienists during dental cleanings and patient instruction.

When a dental client arrives for his/her appointment, the dental assistant has already been preparing for the visit. Before he/she is escorted to a comfortable chair in one of our pleasant patient rooms, the assistant has made sure the room is ready for the particular treatment being performed.

Whether the patient is receiving porcelain veneers, having their teeth whitened, undergoing a routine orthodontia adjustment, or settling in for a two-hour smile redesign with oral sedation, the dental assistant has set the stage for a comfortable and efficient procedure.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, infection control is always foremost in our minds. Our dental assistants, dentists, and hygienists are vigilant about the sterilization of dental instruments and follow strict infection control protocols. The health of our patients and employees is our highest priority.

Dental assistants in Birmingham dental offices may also prepare tray setups, make impressions for restorations, schedule appointments, take x-rays, and maintain and retrieve patient records. They must have a keen eye for detail and an excellent memory as they organize and stock the many different dental supplies in a typical office.

Koch Aesthetic Dentistry is located at 2311 Highland Ave S, Ste 323 in Birmingham, Alabama. We provide general and cosmetic dental procedures including cosmetic and implant dentistry and smile restoration. You can read more about our services at http://www.kochaesthetics.com/meetdrkoch.htm.

To make an appointment for an examination, consultation, or cleaning in our dental spa, call 205-202-8618. Thanks for visiting our Koch Aesthetic Dentistry blog!

More Valuable Than a Diamond

Friday, December 16th, 2011

“Every tooth in a man’s head is more valuable than a diamond.”
-Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, 1605

When Cervantes wrote Don Quixote, there was no way to replace teeth that were lost to trauma or decay. We are fortunate to live here in Birmingham at a time where there is a permanent replacement for missing teeth-the amazing dental implant.

A dental implant, or tooth implant, is anchored into the jaw bone. It does not slide around like a removable denture. It functions just like a natural tooth.

With a dental implant, you can talk, chew, and brush like normal. Eat that steak. Laugh out loud. Sing at the top of your lungs!

The dental implant procedure available in Birmingham is not an experimental treatment. Dental implants have been available for many years. You can be sure that the implant dentistry procedure has been fully tested and tweaked to perfection. The success rate for dental implants in Birmingham is almost one hundred percent.

If you have a missing tooth and want to get a tooth implant, it is important to choose an experienced Birmingham cosmetic dental specialist to perform your implant procedure. To schedule a dental implant or cosmetic dentistry consultation, call 205-202-8618.

A Birmingham dental implant is a strong and beautiful tooth replacement that, incidentally, costs much less than a diamond of similar size. (See the quote at the beginning of this article.) To discuss financing options, contact our office.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we offer the full spectrum of restorative, cosmetic, and general dental services. If you need sedation dentistry to put you at ease or a precision smile design artist, we invite you to meet Dr. J. Paul Koch, DMD.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we are committed to providing superior dental care for patients from 12 to 95.
