Is a Perfect Smile Possible In Birmingham?

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Homewood Cosmetic Dentistry Are you considering a smile makeover in the Birmingham area? Are you skeptical of promises of a ‘perfect smile’, a ‘celebrity smile’ or ‘a dazzling, youthful smile’? Let’s talk about the most popular Birmingham cosmetic dental procedures and the results that can be expected.

Composite Veneers
The application of porcelain veneers at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry can remedy a multitude of aesthetic dental problems and is often a better cosmetic dental solution for candidates in the Birmingham area than dental bonding. Veneers can correct tooth chips, tooth cracks, minor tooth misalignment, discoloration, unattractive tooth shape, and disproportionate tooth size. Can a porcelain veneer create a perfect tooth? While a veneer cannot fix a decayed tooth, it can turn an unsightly tooth into an aesthetically perfect tooth.

Tooth Bleaching
Birmingham tooth whitening is a non-invasive cosmetic dental treatment that dramatically improves a smile. However, some tooth whitening dentists will guarantee fantastic results for any patient that desires a whiter smile. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Birmingham, we only recommend tooth bleaching for clients that are good candidates for the process. If you have all-natural teeth that are dull or stained, tooth whitening will brighten your smile. If you have several dental crowns in the front of your mouth, or gums that have receded, conventional tooth-whitening may not improve your smile.

Call 205-202-8618 to schedule a tooth-whitening consultation.

These are just a couple of the cosmetic dental solutions that create perfect smiles for our Birmingham clients. You can see a complete list of our services at http://www.KochAesthetics.com.

Cosmetic Dental Solutions in Birmingham

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Birmingham cosmetic dentists use dental crowns to solve a number of dental dilemmas. A Cosmetic Dental Solutions in Birminghamdental crown is a strong, natural-looking permanent tooth restoration that covers the top of the damaged tooth.

Birmingham cosmetic dental offices recommend crowns to remedy the following problems:

  • A broken tooth with decay
  • An ill-fitting existing crown
  • A decayed tooth that has lost significant tooth structure
  • A tooth that has had a root canal
  • A tooth that is too small or misshapen
  • A tooth that causes a bite problem

Before your Birmingham dentist can attach the crown to your tooth, we must prepare the tooth. Birmingham cosmetic dentists often apply a local anesthetic so you won’t feel pain during the prepping. Your dentist will remove decay, if any, and shape the tooth to receive the crown. Then a mold is taken of the prepped tooth and surrounding teeth.

temporary crown is then placed on the tooth to protect it until you return to your Birmingham dentistry office to receive the permanent restoration. The patient needs to be careful while wearing the temporary crown. Vigorous brushing or flossing can displace the crown or damage the exposed soft tissue. The Birmingham dental crown patient should also refrain from eating extremely hard foods like nuts or sticky candy.

The mold of your teeth is sent to a Birmingham dental lab where your crown is built. Dental crowns are fabricated in three varieties: tooth colored crowns made of resin or porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and solid metal crowns. Each type has its pros and cons. Your Birmingham cosmetic dentist at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry will choose the best crown material for your particular tooth.

What if you need a permanent dental restoration for both the top and root of your tooth? A dental implant is your answer.

Smile Perfection in Birmingham

Mountain Brook low cost teeth whitening

The most difficult part of attaining perfection is finding something to do for an encore. -Author Unknown

We are perfectionists at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry where we create perfect smiles for our Birmingham cosmetic dentistry and smile makeover patients.

Here are some of the cosmetic dental procedures we use in smile makeovers at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Birmingham.

Implant Dentistry
Dental implants are the ultimate tooth restoration available in Birmingham or anywhere else, for that matter. A tooth implant consists of a metal post that is inserted into your jawbone. The post replaces the root of the missing tooth.

After a few months, it meshes with your jawbone to provide the strength and integrity of a natural tooth. A base and natural-looking crown is permanently attached to the post. For most Birmingham patients with missing teeth, it is the preferred restoration. Implants can also be used to attach dentures and partial dentures for no-slip implant/denture combos.

Crowns
A mainstay of Birmingham cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns are more beautiful than ever. New fabrication technologies and materials have improved the aesthetics and strength of this restorative option.

Veneers
A veneer is a more conservative treatment than a full crown. This is a good choice for Birmingham patients whose teeth are structurally sound but have unsightly flaws such as discoloration, chips, cracks, or imperfect shape. Are you one of the many Birmingham teens or adults with dark tetracycline stains? Call us today at 205-202-8618 to say goodbye to tetracycline stains!

Inlays/Onlays
Inlays and onlays (indirect fillings) are designed and fabricated using dental CAD/CAM software. These fillings are strong, attractive, and precisely fitted to the cavity.

Tooth Whitening
Teeth whitening is the crowning touch for a perfect smile. (It’s the only thing you need if you are a fortunate Birmingham man or woman with perfectly-shaped and aligned teeth.) No one in Birmingham has to live with dull or stained teeth. Call us today for a teeth whitening consultation at our Birmingham office.

Energy Drink Warning For Birmingham

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Homewood Smile Redesign Hello. I’m Dr. J. Paul Koch.

Welcome to my Birmingham dental blog. Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. I am seeing more and more Birmingham teens and adults with tooth enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of sport drinks.

Most of these Birmingham dentistry patients take good care of their teeth, brush and flush, and come into Koch Aesthetic Dentistry for a twice-yearly exam and deep cleaning. But guess what? If you drink energy drinks regularly, your enamel can erode even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene.

Energy drinks like Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster are a cocktail of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding substances. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color.

Perhaps, like myself, you have often noticed young people walking out of Homewood convenience stores swigging 32-ounce energy drinks. I am concerned that Birmingham teens do not understand the serious dental consequences of frequent acid baths.

The following is from ABC Sports:

“Sports drinks are increasingly damaging the teeth of professional and recreational athletes, one of Australia’s top sports dentists has warned. Dr. Brett Dorney says he has witnessed a huge increase in dental erosion since the Sidney Olympics, when he was the event’s deputy director of dental services.”

Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN Story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

I need to add the caveat that soda and fruit juices also contain acids that can damage teeth.

If your teeth have enamel erosion, whatever the cause, we can restore your smile with advanced cosmetic dentistry. Dental crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays can correct both structural and cosmetic problems.

Our phone number is 205-202-8618. If you are interested in re-designing your smile, come in for an exam and consultation. With cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry, we can repair acid-damaged teeth and dramatically increase your face value.

Have A Large Cavity In Your Tooth?

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Birmingham Cosmetic Dentistry When Dr. J. Paul Koch of Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Birmingham repairs a tooth that has decay or damage, the procedure chosen often depends on the location of the problem. (We’re talking tooth-specific locale here; it doesn’t matter whether you live in Vestavia Hills, Crestline, Homewood, or Hoover.) If there is a chip, crack or cavity on the biting surface of a tooth, an onlay or inlay is often used to restore the tooth.

Inlays and onlays are a type of tooth restoration used successfully at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry. They are usually bigger than a conventional filling yet smaller than complete dental crowns. An inlay is used to fill an area inside the cusp tips or bumps of a tooth. An onlay covers an area that includes more than one cusp.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, the inlays and onlays we place for our Vestavia Hills, Crestline and Homewood clients are indistinguishable from their natural teeth.  Dr. J. Paul Koch has the finely-honed eye for detail and complete mastery of dental aesthetics to create an exact match.

Koch Aesthetic Dentistry inlays and onlays:

  • Are stain resistant
  • Do not cause tooth sensitivity
  • Are beautifully matched to natural teeth
  • When bonded to the tooth, they strengthen the tooth and prevent further decay or damage

Call 205-202-8618 to book a cosmetic dental consultation today.  We also offer sedation dentistry for patients who fear dental procedures.

We’ll help you keep your smile happy and healthy!

Tooth Brushing Basics For Healthy Smiles In Birmingham

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Birmingham Teeth Bleaching Why should every Birmingham cosmetic dentistry patient brush at least twice a day? Let’s take a look at why this is so important.

Brushing and flossing is the best way to prevent decay.

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and carefully flossing removes the food from our teeth and inhibits the build up of plaque. If we let food stay on our teeth, the starches in the food will mix with the plaque. This nasty mixture forms an acid which immediately starts drilling into the enamel to form cavities. Brushing can’t get all the spaces between your teeth, so you’ve got to floss also.

Brushing and flossing keeps gums and bone healthy even if you have had cosmetic dentistry work done such as dental crowns.

If you let gum disease go untreated, you can lose teeth that are cavity-free!

The progression of gum disease (gingivitis) goes like this:

  1. Plaque build-up irritates gums.
  2. Irritated gums pull away from teeth.
  3. Bacteria multiplies in the spaces between the gum and tooth.
  4. The bone holding the tooth is eaten by the bacteria.
  5. Say goodbye to the tooth.

The good news is that gingivitis can be reversed if detected early.

Call Koch Aesthetic Dentistry at 205-202-8618 to schedule a gum disease evaluation at our office in Birmingham.  We offer sedation dentistry during dental procedures for anxious patients.

Full Mouth Reconstruction in Birmingham

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Hoover Dental Implants Birmingham dental techniques and materials have advanced to a point where total and near-total mouth reconstruction is possible right here in the Birmingham area.

Unlike conventional removable dentures, extensive mouth reconstruction involves strong, functional and aesthetically pleasing teeth with roots permanently anchored into the jaw bone.

You have probably heard around Birmingham about dental implants; the tooth replacement option that is, in most cases, the best possible replacement for a missing tooth. Dental implants have been used in Vestavia Hills, Crestline and Homewood for many years to replace one or two missing teeth. However, they can also provide a structure for dental crowns, bridges, and anchored dentures that replace nearly every tooth in the mouth!

Every Birmingham  smile makeover patient requires a somewhat unique combination of cosmetic dental procedures, but let’s talk about a hypothetical case involving several restorations:

‘Linda’ was a 52 year-old Birmingham patient with a mouthful of problems. She was missing most of her back teeth on both her upper and lower arch. Four of her front teeth were chipped and her gums had eroded revealing the metal bases of two old crowns.

To restore a beautiful, strong and youthful-looking smile, she would receive dental implants to anchor partial dentures for her upper and lower back teeth. After soft tissue grafts, her front teeth would receive a combination of porcelain crowns and dental veneers.

The result? A stunning smile, renewed confidence and no more slipping dentures!

Veneers Create Stunning Smiles in Mountain Brook

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Veneers Create Stunning Smiles in Mountain BrookDental veneers have myriad applications in Mountain Brook and Birmingham cosmetic dentistry. With dental veneers, you can transform your smile without significant restorative dental work.

Is your tooth enamel worn and thin? Tooth-colored porcelain veneers have the translucency of healthy tooth enamel. Many Mountain Brook and Birmingham dental clients have received veneers to cover worn enamel. Some believe they look twenty years younger!

Have your teeth developed uneven edges? Tooth grinding, natural wear and other factors can roughen tooth edges. Porcelain veneers are a minimally invasive correction for uneven tooth edges. Veneers are a popular treatment for Vestavia Hills, Crestline, Mountain Brook, and Birmingham cosmetic dentistry patients.

Do you have chips or cracks in your teeth? If your teeth are otherwise healthy, veneers provide a flawless tooth surface. Are your teeth yellow or gray? Dental veneers can fix that, too. Veneers can be fabricated in any shade to perk up your smile while still blending naturally with your skin tones.

Porcelain veneers are paper-thin, tooth-shaped covers that are affixed to the front of teeth. Traditional veneers required the removal of a thin layer of tooth structure.

Veneers are strong, natural looking and one of the most affordable cosmetic dentistry procedures. Dental veneers are usually far less expensive than complete dental crowns, yet they are just as strong and beautiful.

Birmingham aesthetic dentists love dental veneers because they correct a multitude of tooth problems. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we would be happy to show you what veneers can do for you. Koch Aesthetic Dentistry is located at 2311 Highland Avenue South, Suite 323 in Birmingham. We provide premium dental care for many of your friends and neighbors in the greater Mountain Brook and Birmingham area. Our phone number is 205-202-8618.
