Cosmetic Dental Consequences Of Oral Piercing In Birmingham

Oral piercing is a popular form of body-art in Birmingham, but just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s safe. I’m Dr. J. Paul Koch, a dentist serving Birmingham Alabama and the surrounding areas. When my patients ask me about the safety of oral piercings, I make sure they understand the possible consequences.

First, people should know that infection is always a major concern with any piercing, but because the mouth is the perfect environment for breeding bacteria, oral piercings are especially problematic. Chewing, swallowing, and speaking can also be impaired by an oral piercing.

Oral piercings can lead to an increase in saliva flow and, possibly, excessive drooling, something my Birmingham cosmetic dental patients generally want to avoid. (I don’t know anyone who thinks drooling is attractive.) Chipped or cracked teeth, damage to dental fillings, and metal sensitivity are other possible results.

Another serious risk associated with piercings that should concern Birmingham area residents is nerve damage. Many people experience temporary numbness after a piercing, but for some, sensations never return. An injured nerve can also affect facial movements as well as your sense of taste.

Do you really want to risk looking like a stroke victim for the rest of your life?

If you’ve read through this and you’re still sure a tongue bar or lip piercing is for you, please consult your Birmingham area dentist so they can help you make the safest decision possible for your dental health. If you are looking for a dentist around Birmingham, our passionate staff here at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry would be happy to schedule an appointment for you. We offer dental implants, porcelain veneers, laser dentistry, and more!

We may even convince you that safe, effective cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening, veneers, or bonding would be a smarter and safer way to express your personality and boost your confidence. Give us a call today!

3 Ways To Keep Your Mouth Happy, Birmingham!

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Your Diet And Your Birmingham Cosmetic Dentist

Hi. I’m Dr. J. Paul Koch, a cosmetic and sedation dentist here in Birmingham. It is my goal to help my patients have optimum oral health, and today I would like to talk about something else associated with our mouths that doesn’t get as much attention as cavities or cosmetic dentistry: it’s our sense of taste.

A happy mouth is not only a healthy mouth, but also a mouth that can enjoy the flavors of all types of foods. And it turns out that many of the habits that will keep your taste buds sensitive are those that will also be good for your teeth and gums. So here are a few tips to help you better enjoy the flavor of your food.

1) Treat dry mouth. Dry mouth can create a loss of taste sensitivity, so it should be treated quickly by your Birmingham dentist. Plus, optimal levels of saliva are important to avoid cavities and keep gums healthy.

2) Avoid processed foods with fake flavors and too much sugar and salt. They will quickly desensitized you to more subtle, healthy flavors.

3) Don’t smoke! Cigarettes are responsible for so many horrible health issues, but many people don’t realize that their sense of taste is dulled while they smoke and the olfactory nerves can even be damaged permanently.

Thank you so much for visiting the Birmingham dentist blog. Along with dental health and a keen sense of taste, I want my patients to have the beautiful smile they have always desired. So, if you have any questions regarding cosmetic dentistry such as smile makeovers, dental implants or teeth whitening, please contact us. We are located at 2311 Highland Ave S, Ste 323 and you can reach us for an appointment at 205-202-8618.

Time To Floss In Birmingham

Friday, April 12th, 2013

Birmingham Cosmetic Dentistry

Many residents of the Birmingham area are finding that they just don’t have time to floss and that it’s difficult to fit it into their daily schedule. If you’ve found this to be true, here are some ideas for when to fit this important dental health habit into your day.

The most common time is right before bed, but make sure you aren’t too tired to do a good job.
Right when you wake up is also an option, but if food is left between teeth all night, it has a chance to turn into plaque.
Try just after lunch, but before you go back to work.
Floss while you are in the car sitting in traffic. It’s easier one-handed with the pre-strung floss pics. (You might get some strange looks from other drivers, but it’s worth it.)
After you exercise – keep some floss in your gym bag.
While you’re watching the nightly news.

I hope this gives you some ideas to help you make flossing part of your daily routine. Flossing is essential for anyone in Birmingham who wants to have a healthy smile.

If you want to improve your smile, look into cosmetic dentistry procedures such as porcelain veneers, invisible braces, teeth whitening or dental implants.

My name is Dr. J. Paul Koch and I am a passionate Birmingham cosmetic dentist. Helping my dental patients establish good habits is important to me, as well as helping them achieve the smile they want with cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers, teeth whitening and complete smile makeovers.

We are currently accepting new patients, so give us a call at 205-202-8618 to make an appointment!

Mouthwash Facts In Birmingham

Mouthwash Facts From Your Birmingham Cosmetic Dentist

Hi, I am Dr. J. Paul Koch and this is the Koch Aesthetic Dentistry blog. In today’s post I would like to discuss mouthwash. Many Alabama residents use mouthwashes to freshen their breath and help retard tooth decay. Mouthwash should never be used exclusively though, good oral hygiene starts with a thorough tooth brushing followed by flossing. Mouthwash is just a supplement in your dental hygiene tool box.

It is important for Alabama residents to know what kind of mouthwash they are using. Some mouthwashes merely mask bad breath while others help reduce the bacteria that causes plaque and bad breath.

If you are one of the Birmingham residents that suffers from bad breath, it is important to choose a mouthwash that contains ingredients that help prevent tooth decay such as fluoride. But Birmingham folks also need to use caution when using mouthwashes because many of the ingredients are dangerous when the recommended amount of mouthwash is exceeded.

Some of the poisonous components are chlorhexidine gluconate, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and methyl salicylate. If you experience throat pain, vomiting, headache, or abdominal pain after using mouthwash, seek medical help immediately. The National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) can answer questions if you feel have over used your mouthwash.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry we want everyone to have great smelling breath, but to use caution when treating their bad breath. Make sure to read your mouthwash label and follow all instructions given.

In addition to preventative dental care, Koch Aesthetic Dentistry offers a wide range of cosmetic dentistry procedures. If you are a resident anxious to have a whiter, brighter smile, Koch Aesthetic Dentistry offers various teeth whitening options. Koch Aesthetic Dentistry also provide smile restoration and cosmetic and implant dentistry.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry we have been improving the smiles of residents in Birmingham Alabama and the surrounding areas since 2000. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Koch Aesthetic Dentistry Treats Cankers Sores, Lesions, and Fever Blisters

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Cosmetic Dentist Alabama

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, one of the most common complaints we hear from our Alabama cosmetic and laser dentistry patients is problems with mouth sores.

There are many different kinds of oral lesions which can make eating and talking painful. Some are annoying yet harmless, while other sores are more serious and require medical intervention.

Though not contagious, the most common complaint is canker sores, which affect an estimated eighty percent of the Alabama population. Canker sores can be attributed to stress, tissue irritation, or acidic foods. Dr. J. Paul Koch can prescribe a topical dental paste to relieve pain and guard against infection. Recurring canker sores can sometimes be a symptom of a larger health problem.

Another common complaint is fever blisters or cold sores, which are contagious fluid-filled blisters. Cold sore sufferers in Alabama should be aware that they can become infected. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we advise our patients on how to treat cold sores and avoid further breakouts.

Fungal infections and oral cancer can cause sores in the mouth and throat. See your Alabama cosmetic dentist if you experience any of the following:

Lumps or discolored patches in the mouth lasting longer than three weeks
Unusually large lesions
Multiple sores

Dr. J. Paul Koch reminds patients that eating a well balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, and not smoking can all aid in oral health and hygiene.

To schedule an appointment, or ask about other oral concerns, contact Koch Aesthetic Dentistry today at 205-202-8618.

Teeth: What Have They Done For You Lately?

Friday, January 18th, 2013

Cosmetic Dentistry Birmingham

Welcome to the Birmingham dental blog! Today we are going to look at the secret life of our teeth.

The shape of each tooth gives a clue to what it does. The incisors, or your front teeth, are sharp. They need to be because they are there to cut food and their curvature helps move food inside the mouth.

Behind the incisors, you find the canine teeth. Their roots go far into the jaw bone because they are designed to hold onto food and tear through it.

Premolars, found just behind the canines, are flat on the surface. This allows them to crush your food as you chew. And, finally, in the very back are the molars. They are large and have nice, flat chewing surfaces that help them to grind food down into smaller, more digestible pieces.

I’m Dr. J. Paul Koch, a Birmingham cosmetic dentist, and I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a little more about the different teeth in your mouth.
If you are in the Birmingham area and would like to make an appointment at my practice, Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, please give us a call at 205-202-8618. We can schedule an appointment and tell you about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening and dental implants.

If you’ve ever been interested in a smile makeover, come on in and we’ll discuss the possibilities. I want my Birmingham dental patients to have healthy mouths and beautiful smiles. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we offer comprehensive dental services including:

cosmetic dentistry
dental implants
porcelain veneers

Look For The Seal In Alabama

Friday, January 11th, 2013

Cosmetic Dentistry Alabama

When you go to an Alabama drugstore or supermarket looking for toothpaste, mouthwash, teeth whitener, or other oral care product, make sure that it carries the seal of the American Dental Association. The seal is there to help you make the best choices you can for the products you need to keep your mouth clean and healthy.

The American Dental Association (or ADA) only places their seal on a product after it has been evaluated to be safe as well as effective. This usually means that companies have to meet standards even higher than those required by law.

Making sure to purchase products with the seal is practically like shopping with your Alabama cosmetic dentist or dental hygienist right by your side!

Hi, I’m Dr. J. Paul Koch of Koch Aesthetic Dentistry. We serve cosmetic dental patients in Alabama. We take pride in caring for our patients and, like the ADA, want you to have a healthy, beautiful smile. Many of our patients wonder if a smile makeover is right for them. If you’d like to know, schedule an appointment and we’ll take a look!
