What Does A Missing Tooth Say About You?

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Dental Implants Birmingham When you meet someone in Birmingham who is missing a front tooth, what does that say to you? Do you wonder if they were in an accident? Do you automatically start making assumptions about their income, level of education and overall physical health?

Though it is extremely unfair, we are often judged (and misjudged) by our appearance. Even if a person is impeccably dressed and groomed, a missing front tooth detracts from the overall pleasing impression.

Here is a personal story from a woman who lost a tooth:

I lost my job and along with it my dental insurance, then a month later, one of my front teeth. It has been very hard to find work…. and I know the missing tooth has cost me several jobs.”

A missing tooth can be a big deal.

Dental implants not only restore oral health, they restore self-confidence. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Studies have shown that after more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to function at peak performance. If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implants are one of the procedures we routinely perform at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry to help our Birmingham clients regain the beautiful smile they once had. Not all cosmetic dental procedures are as extreme as teeth implants. There are many minimally-invasive remedies for unattractive smiles.

Porcelain veneers instantly provide a perfect, gleaming tooth surface for Birmingham clients with broken or discolored teeth. Teeth whitening is a quick and affordable dentistry procedure in Birmingham that achieves dramatic results without requiring the removal of any tooth structure. Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable In Alabama

Sedation Dentistry Alabama

Pain isn’t fun. Your Alabama family dentist knows this, and that is why the dental team at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry have made patient comfort a top priority. In conjunction with creating a relaxing environment, your dentist has various medications that can reduce and even eliminate pain associated with different cosmetic dental procedures to give you a more enjoyable experience.

Some of the most common pain-relieving medications used in Alabama cosmetic dental offices and around the country are topical anesthetics. These are swabbed directly onto mouth tissue so they only numb the very surface layers. Topical anesthetics can reduce the pain of mouth sores, or they can be applied to prepare the mouth for an injection.

Local anesthetics are injected into mouth tissue (usually the gums) to block the nerve sensations to specific areas of the mouth. Alabama dentists numb the mouth in this way before filling cavities, treating gum disease, or before certain cosmetic dentistry procedures.

More involved dental procedures may necessitate the need for nitrous oxide or even general anesthesia. Ask us about sedation dentistry and oral conscious sedation.

It is very common for your dentist to recommend an over the counter analgesic to relieve pain after a dental visit. These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

Because your Alabama cosmetic dentist will most likely use a pain reliever during the dental visit or prescribe something for you to take after the treatment, make sure you jot down a complete list of medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, before each appointment.

I’m Dr. Paul Koch and I want Alabama residents to be informed about their dental care, especially as it pertains to pain relief during dental treatment. If you live in Alabama and are looking for quality dental care, please contact my office today at 205-202-8618. Our continuing education staff would be happy to talk to you about cosmetic dentistry, sedation dentistry, implant dentistry, and the other services we offer.

Lighten Up In Birmingham

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Teeth Whitening Birmingham Hello! Today’s dental article is for Birmingham area people with stained teeth. Do you think your teeth are too stained for teeth whitening to have any effect? Think again. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Birmingham, we are whitening smiles for patients with both intrinsic and extrinsic stains.

Extrinsic stains are caused by dark colored foods and drinks, smoking, and normal aging. Koch Aesthetic Dentistry cosmetic dentistry patients with extrinsic stains achieve great results from both in-office and take-home teeth whitening systems.

Intrinsic stains form on the inside but can be seen from the outside. Tetracycline, excessive fluoride, trauma, and aging can cause intrinsic staining for unfortunate Birmingham dentistry patients. Though these stains are harder to remove, many Birmingham patients with intrinsic staining can whiten their teeth with take-home whitening kits. The process often takes longer, but with persistence, intrinsic stains can be lightened.

In addition to teeth whitening, we provide a full menu of cosmetic dental procedures at our Birmingham office. With porcelain veneers, you can correct the shape of your teeth in addition to brightening the color. If you are missing a tooth, a dental implant may be the solution. Call 205-202-8618 for a dental implant or smile design consultation.

If you are embarrassed by a less-than-sparkling smile, let the team of dental professionals at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry help you lighten up.
