Do Whitestrips Work?

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Do Whitestrips Work in Birmingham? If you have visited the toothpaste aisle at your Birmingham Wal-Mart, you have probably noticed dozens of products that claim to whiten your teeth. A few years ago, the only over-the-counter tooth whitening options were whitening toothpastes and Crest Whitestrips. Now there is a wide variety of products at every drugstore counter.

Whitening Rinses
Whitening rinses are similar to mouthwashes. They kill bacteria, freshen breath and may help remove plaque. Whitening rinses, however, contain tooth-whitening ingredients not found in mouthwashes. Manufacturers advise taking a mouthful of the rinse and letting it slosh around on your teeth for one minute twice a day. Though this method is simple, many users never notice a lightening of their teeth. This is probably because the rinse does not touch your teeth long enough to truly whiten them.

Whitening Strips
The whitening strips you can buy in grocery stores have a couple of drawbacks. Though they contain a bleaching agent, it is much less potent than those used in dental offices. Another problem is that they do not whiten between teeth because the strips only touch the front surface. Though it is possible to remove stains, it can take months to see any whitening. By that point, you have probably spent more money than you would have if you’d have chosen the professional system at your tooth whitening dental clinic.

Teeth Whitening Gels
Whitening gels are painted onto teeth with a small brush. One problem with whitening gels is that they only stick to dry teeth. If any saliva gets on the teeth during treatment, the gel is more likely to slide off.

If you are serious about dramatically whitening your teeth, the safest, quickest, and most affordable system is at your Birmingham cosmetic dentistry office.  We have many safe teeth whitening options including Zoom whitening.

Give Me Some Air

Air Abrasion Dentists How long have dentists been drilling teeth? Would you believe 9,000 years? In an ancient graveyard in Pakistan, archaeologists unearthed skulls containing teeth that had undergone drilling. The stone-age dentists removed decay using drills constructed of sharpened flint.

Though advanced cosmetic dentistry would not be possible without drilling, the sound of a dental drill can make many patient’s hearts pound. However, there is another way your cosmetic dentist can remove decay. This technique is known as air abrasion or drill-less dentistry. An air abrasion instrument removes material by spraying tiny aluminum oxide particles onto the tooth. The particles work like a sandblaster spraying away the affected tooth structure.

The many advantages of air abrasion make it a popular procedure for cosmetic dentists. Because air abrasion is usually pain free, the need for anesthesia is reduced. The air abrasion instrument does not create vibrations or pressure. Cosmetic dentistry patients appreciate the fact that air abrasion instruments don’t produce that whiny drill sound that rings in your ears and makes your palms sweat. Because of this, air abrasion can be a less-frightening option for young dentistry patients. Air abrasion is often quicker and more precise than traditional drilling, leaving more of the healthy tooth intact.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, we provide anxiety-free dentistry. If you would like to learn more about air abrasion, sedation dentistry or dental implant cost, call us at 205-202-8618. We are located at 2311 Highland Avenue South, Suite 323 in Birmingham. The professional care staff at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry is dedicated to your comfort and satisfaction.

Hate Your Dentures?

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Mountain Brook Dentistry Implant Perhaps you have heard or seen the dental industry’s advertising about dental implants. Most Birmingham dentists claim that implant dentistry can change your life. Does this sound like hype? Exaggeration?

Let’s look at the facts about dental implant anchored dentures:

Chewing: A dental implant can restore up to 95 percent of normal chewing function. How important is chewing? Can you chew easily with your current full or partial denture? Can you bite apples? When was the last time you ate a raw carrot?

Fit: Dental implants stay in place. An implant denture doesn’t slide around in your mouth and cause sores. Those who exercise regularly especially appreciate this benefit.

Appearance: How does your smile look? Can you smile confidently? How many denture wearers love their smile? Dental implants look like natural teeth. They don’t move when you smile, eat, talk, bike, swim, dance, golf, ski; you get the idea.

Bone health: When teeth are extracted, bone recession can occur over time (in fact, this happens in almost every case). Because a dental implant is an artificial ‘tooth root’ inserted into your jaw bone, your bone has a better chance of staying healthy. If there are no other adverse conditions present, your jaw bone should remain strong and dense, just as if the original tooth root were there.

If you hate your dentures and live in the Homewood, Hoover, or Mountain Brook areas why don’t you see your cosmetic dentist for a consultation about dental implants? We can discuss all the particulars including procedure specifics, healing time and dental implant cost. Then you can decide for yourself if dental impalnts will, as promised, change your life.

Birmingham Cosmetic Dentistry at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Cosmetic Denistry in Mountain Brook Do you have a damaged tooth that causes you embarrassment? Even if all your other teeth are nicely shaped and pearly white, guess what other people notice? Yep, the ugly duckling. You have probably experienced that yourself when you have looked at a smile that contains one discolored tooth. No matter how hard you try, the unsightly one is impossible to ignore.

A beautiful smile is an important component of your overall appearance. Unattractive teeth draw the eye away from other pleasing features such as thick shiny hair, gorgeous eyes or a peaches and cream complexion.

Fortunately, there are several cosmetic dentistry procedures to restore or repair one or more teeth. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Birmingham, we can complete most of them in one short visit. Think about it; you could achieve a stunning smile in less than an afternoon!

Veneers, Bonding and Cosmetic Implant Dentistry
Dental bonding is an affordable cosmetic dentistry procedure available in Birmingham at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry. We use dental bonding in a variety of applications. In addition to repairing damage, dental bonding can close gaps between teeth. Porcelain veneers are another minimally invasive cosmetic fix. Like cosmetic dental bonding, veneers correct chips, cracks and improve tooth shape.

What if your problem is not an unattractive tooth but a missing tooth? Don’t despair, a beautiful smile is still possible with dental implants.

For more information about veneers, bonding, implants and other cosmetic denistry procedures, call Koch Aesthetic Dentistry at 205-202-8618. We are conveniently located at 2311 Highland Avenue South, Suite 323 in Birmingham. We provide advanced dentistry for patients in Vestavia Hills, Crestline, Homewood and the surrounding areas. We look forward to showing you cosmetic dentistry ‘before and after’ pictures.
