Afraid of the Dentist? Your Birmingham Sedation Dentist Can Help If you live near Birmingham and experience severe anxiety when undergoing (or even thinking about!) dental treatment, oral sedation is for you.

Conscious sedation dentistry is available in Birmingham at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry. We have been providing sedation dentistry in Birmingham for several years with excellent outcomes. Whether it is called relaxation dentistry, oral conscious sedation or anxiety-free dentistry, it is completely safe and very popular for our nervous cosmetic and restorative dental clients in the Vestavia Hills, Crestline area.

Though it may sound impossible, with oral conscious sedation, Mountain Brook dentistry patients can actually relax during dental visits. In addition, healing times for oral surgery and extensive cosmetic dentistry procedures are often shorter if the patient is sedated during treatment.

Sedation dentistry is great for alleviating anxiety for our Birmingham patients, and oral conscious sedation can be effective for treating or working with the following:

  • Teeth sensitivita;
  • Fear of needles;
  • A powerful gag reflex;
  • Difficulty controlling body movement;
  • Lengthy multi-procedure visits;
  • Difficulty becoming numb with traditional injections.

If you need dental work more extensive than a filling; such as a root canal, tooth implant, crown replacement or wisdom tooth extraction; call Koch Aesthetic Dentistry at 205-202-8618. When you come to our office at 2311 Highland Avenue, Suite 323 in Birmingham, we can give you more information about sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry is only one of the services we offer at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, where your smile is our top priority!

Advanced Dentistry in Birmingham

Advanced Dentistry in Birmingham The world of dentistry continues to advance at a rapid pace. If you have visited a Birmingham dentist in the past few years, you have probably noticed the things that make your visit more comfortable, such as the ability to watch TV or listen to music while receiving treatment. Many Mountain Brook dentistry patients welcome oral conscious sedation to reduce or eliminate pain.

What may not be as obvious are the advances in techniques, tools and materials. Top Birmingham dentists now use digital computer imaging which is safer than traditional x-rays. Dental technicians can store, retrieve and transmit digital images much easier than was possible with traditional x-ray film.

The use of lasers has also changed the face of dentistry. Laser surgery requires less anesthesia, minimizes swelling, and protects surrounding tissue. Mountain Brook family dentists use lasers for detecting and treating cavities, and dental technicians use them for the curing of restorative materials.

Another exciting development in cosmetic dentistry is the CAD-CAM technology that allows Hoover cosmetic dentists to perform restorations in a single visit. The types of procedures that can be completed in one visit include crowns, fillings, inlays, onlays and veneers.

If you need a thorough exam or want to improve your smile with cosmetic dentistry, call Koch Aesthetic Dentistry at 205-202-8618 to schedule a consultation. During your consultation, you can see before and after photos of some of our smile makeover clients. We would love to help you achieve the smile you have always wanted, and we have the tools, experience and technology to make that happen.

Birmingham Porcelain Veneers and Instant Orthodontics If you have been paying attention to the Birmingham orthodontics scene in recent years, you probably know about invisible braces and speed braces. These new teeth straightening procedures have been welcomed by many people, especially Mountain Brook adults who want an alternative to traditional metal braces.

There’s more good news for Vestavia Hills and Crestline dentistry clients who want to straighten their teeth. How about ‘instant orthodontics’?

If you want immediate teeth straightening, you can smile sooner with porcelain veneers from Koch Aesthetic Dentistry!

The key to achieving a celebrity smile may be porcelain veneers for your teeth from a Birmingham cosmetic dentist. Dr. J. Paul Koch at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry can help you determine if porcelain veneer dentistry is for you. Ongoing education is essential for elite cosmetic dentists who work to continually provide the latest procedures and materials for their cosmetic and orthodontic clients. We can help.

In addition to correcting tooth alignment, porcelain veneers are used to whiten teeth and restore chipped teeth in Homewood and Hoover. Porcelain veneers are attached to the front of teeth and often require no removal of healthy tooth structure. Another advantage? They are less expensive than complete crown restorations but look just as natural. Actually, they look far better than most natural teeth!

For an instant orthodontic consultation, call Koch Aesthetic Dentistry at 205-202-8618. Porcelain veneers may be the best way for you to receive a smile makeover at a fraction of the cost.

Mountain Brook Dentists And Your Mouth Sores

Mountain Brook Dentists And Your Mouth Sores

As your local Mountain Brook dentist, one of my roles is to help you take care of your mouth. Sometimes mouth sores can be an issue, and while Mountain Brook dentists often defer to an oral surgeon for extreme cases, we can help you make an assessment.

If you live in the Mountain Brook area and have a mouth sore that lasts more than a week or two; come and see me. Mouth sores can be an indicator of disease, and an early assessment is the best bet. A better understanding of your mouth sores can lead quickly to comfort and a resolution. If necessary, treatment and pain relief can be offered.

There are two common types of mouth sores that are common in the Mountain Brook area: canker sores and cold sores.

Canker sores are small ulcer-like sores with a white or gray base and a red border. They are found on the inside of the mouth and while they are not contagious, they can be painful. Typically a canker sore heals in a week or two. Antimicrobal mouth-rinses, over-the-counter topical anesthetics, and avoiding spicy and acidic foods may offer you temporary relief while your sore is healing.

The cause of a canker sores is not certain. Possible explanations range from a cut on the inside the mouth, and reactions to extreme temperatures or acids from food or drink, to fatigue, stress, and allergies. Some studies point to bacteria or viruses, or combinations of all these factors.

Cold sores, also called fever blisters or Herpes Simplex, are groups of fluid-filled blisters that often appear around the lips, sometimes appearing under the nose or around the chin. Cold sores are contagious and painful, but usually heal in about a week. Some over-the-counter anesthetics may provide relief. There are some antiviral drugs on the market that have shown promise in reducing outbreaks, but there is currently no known cure. The initial infection, known as primary herpes, often occurs before adulthood. Once the virus infects you, it may stay in your body and remain inactive or cause occasional cold sore outbreaks. Outbreaks may be triggered by a fever, sunburn, skin abrasions, stress, or exposure to extremes in temperature.

As your Mountain Brook dentist, I can’t do much to stop canker sores or cold sores in your mouth. I can discuss the health of your mouth, and examine any causes that make your mouth sore. In some cases a change in the way you care for your mouth can reduce the chances of getting mouth sores. If you are in the Birmingham area, and would like to speak with a dental professional about mouth sores, give us a call at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry.

Our number is 205-202-8618.
